Hybrid solar systems
A hybrid solar system runs your house from the sun during the day, stores what is left over in a lithium battery, and uses that battery after sunset or when the grid fails. The inverter decides between solar, battery and grid automatically, and the changeover is fast enough that lights and computers do not notice it. It is the right choice if you want power through load shedding or in the evening; it costs roughly twice a daytime system of the same panel capacity, because of the battery.

How the inverter decides
While the sun is up the array feeds the load first. Anything spare charges the battery. Once the battery is full and the load is met, a hybrid inverter can export the surplus if you are on net metering.
After sunset the inverter draws from the battery until it reaches the reserve you set, then falls back to the grid. If the grid is down, it keeps running on the battery alone. You can set how much of the battery to hold back for outages, which matters more in areas with long load shedding.
Sizing the battery
Battery capacity is voltage multiplied by amp-hours. A 25.6V 100Ah unit holds 2.56 kWh; a 51.2V 100Ah unit holds 5.12 kWh. Usable capacity on lithium is close to the full figure, which is why it has displaced tubular in almost every installation we do.
Size the battery from the load you want to carry overnight, not from the panel capacity. Two fans, lights and a fridge for a night is a very different figure from running an air conditioner, and the inverter must be able to deliver the peak as well as the energy.
Inverter capacity sets the battery voltage: up to about 4.2kW we fit 25.6V units, above it 51.2V. Mixing voltages or brands in one bank is not something we will do, because the weakest unit then governs the whole bank.
What we fit
Ziewnic inverters in the Axpert Twin and Lenox ranges, and lithium batteries from Solax, Itell and Ziewnic. The models we fit are listed below. Your quotation prices the exact combination your load calls for, itemised line by line.
All of it is supplied with installation, protection equipment, commissioning and a five-year inverter warranty. Warranty claims go through us.
Questions we are asked
What is the difference between a hybrid and a daytime solar system?
A daytime system has no battery: it runs your load while the sun is up and does nothing after dark or during an outage. A hybrid system adds a lithium battery and an inverter that can charge it, so power continues in the evening and through load shedding. A hybrid system of the same panel capacity costs roughly twice as much.
How long does a lithium battery last?
A good lithium battery is rated for several thousand charge cycles, which in normal domestic use is eight to ten years. It degrades gradually rather than failing suddenly, so you lose runtime slowly rather than losing the system.
Will a hybrid system run an air conditioner at night?
It can, if the battery bank and the inverter are sized for it. An inverter air conditioner draws far less than a conventional one, and the limit is usually the energy in the battery rather than the inverter's rating. We work this out from your actual load at the survey rather than guessing.
Does a hybrid system work during load shedding?
Yes. That is the main reason people buy one. The inverter keeps supplying the house from the battery and the panels when the grid is down, and switches over fast enough that you generally do not notice.
