Solar for homes

A home solar system is sized from the appliances you run at the same time and the hours you run them, not from the size of the house. For most families in Peshawar the real question is not how many panels but whether you need a battery: a daytime system cuts the bill for the hours the sun is up and costs least, while a hybrid system with lithium storage keeps the lights, fans and fridge going through the evening and through load shedding, for roughly twice the money.

Start with the evening, not the bill

Walk through a normal evening in your house. If what you mind is the fan stopping at nine o'clock, or the children doing homework by phone torch during load shedding, then a battery is the only thing that answers it and no amount of extra panel capacity will.

If the heavy use is in daylight — air conditioning through the afternoon, a pump, a workshop at the back — a daytime system takes the largest bite out of the bill for the least money, and there is nothing to replace in eight years.

What a family actually runs

Fans at roughly 75 watts each, LED lights at about 12, a refrigerator around 200, an inverter air conditioner near 1,000 for each ton and a conventional one half as much again. Add up what is on together on a summer evening and that is the figure the inverter has to supply, plus headroom for the fridge compressor starting.

A house running fans, lights, a fridge, a television and one inverter air conditioner comes to roughly 2,200 watts and is served comfortably by a 5kVA unit. Add a second air conditioner and you are into 7kVA territory.

For overnight backup, work in kilowatt-hours instead. Lights, fans, a fridge and a television for five evening hours is about 2.5 kWh, which one 25.6V 100Ah lithium unit covers with nothing spare and two cover comfortably. An air conditioner overnight changes that figure completely, and this is the step where wishful thinking costs the most.

What it is like to live with

Very little to do. Rinse the panels with plain water every couple of months in dry weather, early or late rather than onto hot glass at midday. Do not walk on the modules. That is close to the whole of the maintenance.

Expect strong generation between mid-morning and mid-afternoon, less on an overcast day and less again in a short winter day. Compare this January with last January rather than with June.

The one part with a finite life is the battery, at eight to ten years for lithium. Budget for it at the start and the arithmetic over twenty years looks quite different from the arithmetic over two.

Questions we are asked

How many solar panels does a house need?

Work from the energy you want to cover rather than the number of panels. In this region a well-oriented, unshaded array yields roughly four kilowatt-hours per installed kilowatt per day across the year, so covering 10 kWh a day needs about 2.5 kW of panels — five 590W modules. A survey replaces that estimate with a measurement.

Can a home solar system run an air conditioner?

In daylight, comfortably, if the inverter is sized for it. Overnight it depends on the battery: an inverter air conditioner draws far less than a conventional one, but it is still the largest thing in most houses and the limit is usually the energy stored rather than the inverter's rating.

Is solar worth it for a house in Peshawar?

It depends on when you use power. A household consuming mostly in daylight sees the fastest return, because every unit generated is a unit not bought. A household whose problem is the evening is buying backup as much as savings, and should judge it on that.

Can I start small and add to it later?

Panels yes, and a battery only if the inverter was chosen for it. A daytime inverter cannot charge a battery, so adding storage afterwards means replacing it. Tell us at the survey if storage is likely and we will size a hybrid inverter from the start.
