Tubular batteries for solar
A tubular battery is the cheaper deep-cycle battery to buy and the more expensive one to own. You can safely draw only about half its rated capacity before the life shortens sharply, it needs topping up with distilled water, it wants a ventilated space, and in daily cycling it is generally finished in three to four years. Lithium gives you nearly all of its rated capacity, needs no maintenance, and lasts eight to ten. We fit lithium for that reason, and this page explains the comparison honestly rather than simply asserting it.
Lithium batteries we fit
Ask us about lithium batteries we fit.
Everything listed is supplied and fitted by our own engineers. We price a system from your actual load rather than publishing rates that move with the exchange rate — ask us and your quotation comes back itemised line by line, at no charge.
Rated capacity is not usable capacity
This single point explains most of the difference, and most of the confusion when people compare prices.
Draw more than roughly half of a tubular battery's rating and its life falls away quickly, so a 200Ah tubular bank realistically offers about 100Ah of working energy. A lithium unit gives back close to its full rating. A 100Ah lithium battery and a 200Ah tubular bank therefore do about the same work — which is the comparison worth making, not the one between the two price tags.
In kilowatt-hours: 25.6V multiplied by 100Ah is 2.56 kWh, and 51.2V by 100Ah is 5.12 kWh. Those are the two lithium sizes we fit, and nearly all of it is usable.
What ownership involves
A tubular bank needs distilled water topped up, gives off gas while charging, and wants ventilation away from living space. Neglect the watering for a season and the life collapses. That is a real commitment, and it is the part most often left out of the sales conversation.
Lithium needs nothing. No watering, no ventilation requirement, no gassing. It is far lighter and can be wall-mounted, which matters in a house with no room to give over to a battery bank.
The arithmetic over ten years
In daily cycling you would expect to replace a tubular bank roughly three times across ten years. You would buy lithium once. Even where the tubular bank is substantially cheaper each time, three purchases outrun one — before counting the maintenance and the evenings lost to a bank that died early.
Charging speed matters more than it sounds, too. On a short winter day the array may only have a few good hours; a battery that accepts charge quickly is a battery that is actually full by evening.
Where tubular still makes sense
If the budget genuinely will not stretch, the system is small, and somebody will reliably do the watering. We would rather say that than pretend the case never exists.
But for an installation meant to last twenty-five years, tied to an inverter that expects to work with it for a decade, lithium is the sounder purchase. That is why our catalogue is lithium: we would rather not fit something we expect to be replacing in three years.
Questions we are asked
Which is better, a tubular or a lithium battery?
For solar, lithium on every measure except the purchase price: roughly twice the usable capacity for the same rating, no watering or ventilation, faster charging and two to three times the life. Tubular wins only on the day you pay for it.
How long does a tubular battery last on a solar system?
Three to four years in daily cycling, sooner if it has been run flat repeatedly or left unwatered. Lithium is usually eight to ten in the same duty.
Do you supply tubular batteries?
Our catalogue is lithium. We will discuss tubular honestly if the budget demands it and explain exactly what you are accepting, but we do not keep it in stock, because we would rather not fit something we expect to be replacing in three years.
Can I use tubular batteries with a hybrid inverter?
Many hybrid inverters support both, but the charging profile differs and must be set correctly, and the usable-capacity difference means you need roughly twice the nominal rating for the same backup. Never mix chemistries, brands or ages within one bank.
